NAT GEO CITY CHASE RACES ACROSS SINGAPORE

winning team
Winners Greg Shand and Cameron Richards cross the finish line in four hours, eight minutes and 57 seconds

August 23rd 2008, Singapore…
221 teams flagged off at Central today for Nat Geo City Chase Singapore with Cameron Richards and Greg Shand coming in first with a time of four hours, eight minutes and 57 seconds. Boo Wei Jie Jonathan and Ong Boon Han finished second and Audrey and Scott Mitchell came in third with a time of four hours 17minutes and five seconds and four hours 29 minutes and 16 seconds respectively.

The winners of the Singapore leg of the World’s Largest Urban Adventure Series have won the golden ticket – a trip to Morocco in November to compete against ten other nations in the World Championships.

Team ‘G-Cam’ is made up of two friends who take part in multi-discipline adventure races across the region together and were keen to tackle Nat Geo City Chase this year.

Cameron Richards said after crossing the finishing line, “This is my first time entering into Nat Geo City Chase and it has been an awesome experience.

We said we were going to win a race together this year but we didn’t expect to win this one. Today was really challenging but a lot of fun.”

Teams had to complete a total of ten ChasePoints from a choice of 17 that included challenging activities testing the mind body and spirit. Teams had to complete a range of challenges such as learning complicated dance steps at Millenia Walk; eating worms with curry powder and surviving the bucking-bronco after drinking a half-pint of San Miguel.

Teams of two, dressed in bright yellow Nat Geo City Chase t-shirts made their way to various points of the island using only public transport or the ‘fast-forward’ RAV4s that were scouring the ChasePoints to help teams get ahead. ChasePoint locations stretched as far from town as East Coast Park and Holland Village with one of the most popular challenges being a five-metre dive for both team members at Queenstown Swimming Complex.

Greg Shand described their experience, “I took part in this event last year but didn’t manage to complete it. To win this year and get the opportunity to represent Singapore at the World Championships will be a great honour.

Neither of us has been to Morocco before so we are going to have to study hard, do lots of research and give it our very best shot.”

Nominated charity for this year’s event was the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) who staged one of the ChasePoints at the Singapore Sports Council offices. Teams had to create balloon sculptures and sell them to people around Hereen shopping mall with the money raised going to SDSC. Another challenge was for teams to play a game of basketball, paddle tennis or street soccer against each other at Stadium Boulevard to complete the ChasePoint.

Mr Tan Ju Seng, President of the Singapore Disability Sports Council said, “It has been great to be part of Nat Geo City Chase this year and to see the subject of disability garner some attention through our involvement.

With the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games less than two weeks away, it is a perfect time to educate people on the opportunities and challenges faced by the disabled in Singapore. Today’s event has hopefully made everyone think a little more about the way society is designed and how we can work together to make it more accessible for all.”

All 221 teams crossed the finish line at Central at 7.30pm and the prize presentation was led by Sporting Spectrum Managing Director, Chris Robb, and National Geographic Channel Asia’s Assistant Marketing Manager, Angie Tan. Robb said, “What a fantastic turnout we have had today and congratulations to everyone for making it to the end of a tough but exciting Nat Geo City Chase.

Our winners Greg and Cameron gave a tremendous display of team work and determination to finish the race in a time of four hours, eight minutes and 57 seconds and we know they will do Singapore proud when they head to Morocco for the World Championships later this year.”

Angie Tan presented the winners with their plaque saying, “Nat Geo Adventure is all about bringing the spirit of adventure and travel to its viewers. By partnering with City Chase we have been able to bring this excitement and action live to everyone taking part today. I congratulate everyone on their efforts here today and you can look forward to watching all the highlights on Nat Geo Adventure Channel next year, after the finals in Morocco in November.”

All participants adjourned to The Cavern on Boat Quay with plenty of San Miguel beer – the official beer – for enjoyment, as new friendships were forged and memories of the day’s events shared.
